Strategic Plan - Goal 2
To create a safe, supportive, and socially just learning environment for each student in Chignecto-Central Regional School Board.
Strategy #1 – Define social justice and provide structures to increase the knowledge and understanding of social justice principles in the context of CCRSB.

Achievement Measures
|
|
By 2013, all staff in CCRSB will have increased knowledge and understanding of social justice principles.
|
By 2013, all new teachers will have completed professional development to increase their understanding of social justice principles.
|
By 2013, the CCRSB leadership program will include a module on social justice.
|
By 2013, all professional development in CCRSB will have a social justice component.
|
|
Commitments:
- Create a framework for social justice using Race Relations, Cross-Cultural Understanding as the reference for the CCRSB context.
- A document entitled Social Justice in CCRSB will be completed by June 2011.
- The use of webinars and DVDs will be investigated as a means of increasing knowledge and awareness.
- All staff will be encouraged to complete the Cultural Competency Module available on CCRSB integrated services.
- Establish a CCRSB social justice lead team using the elements of Race Relations, Cross Cultural Understanding and Human Rights as its reference.
- Work will begin on professional development for new teachers, the leadership program module and appropriate social justice modules to be used in CCRSB professional development activities.

Strategy #2 – Provide support and expand our capacity to implement school-based behavioral intervention and prevention programs for at-risk students.
|
Achievement Measures
|
|
By June 2012, all CCRSB schools will be tracking student behavioral incidents on the Nova Scotia Student Information System template.
|
By June 2013, the number of student days lost to out-of school and in-school suspension incidents will decrease by 5%.
|
By June 2013, credit recovery programs will be in at least 50% of our high schools.
|
|
Commitments:
- Nova Scotia Student Information System Phase 1 and Phase 2 schools will track student behavioral incidents in Pearson Power School.
- Positive Effective Behavior Supports (PEBS) will be used in all CCRSB schools.
- Credit recovery will be researched to determine best practices to be used in the CCRSB model.
- CCRSB will implement any recommendations from the Nova Scotia Department of Education report on Classroom Climate and Student Engagement.
- The use of Synervoice technology (an automated calling system) will be expanded, as appropriate.
- Suspension support teachers will continue to be funded on a family basis.
- CCRSB will investigate the feasibility of providing an alternate school(s).

Budget: Initiatives in Strategy #2 will be funded from current CCRSB status quo budgets and DoE targeted funding. Credit recovery and Synervoice expansion will demand future budget consideration. $25,000 has been included in the 2010-2011 budget on a “one-time” only basis for credit recovery.

Strategy #3 – All CCRSB schools will implement the Nova Scotia Student Information System, Pearson Power School.

Achievement Measures
|
|
By June 2011, Phase One schools will have completed implementation of Pearson Power School.
|
By September, 2011 CCRSB will implement student self-identification practices supported by parents/guardians of racially diverse students in CCRSB.
|
By June 2012, Phase 2 schools will have completed implementation of Pearson Power School.
|
|
Commitments:
- CCRSB project management team will provide appropriate training and support for Phase 1 and Phase 2 schools.
- CCRSB will provide targeted support to schools on gradebook, assessment, evaluation and parent portal issues.
- CCRSB will investigate the capacity of disaggregating student achievement data in Pearson Power School.

Budget: Initiatives in Strategy #3 will be funded from current CCRSB status quo budgets and DoE targeted funding. There will be a minimal cost pressure in the 2011-2012 school year related to maintenance fees for Pearson Power School.
|
Strategy #4 – Create the CCRSB Pyramid of Interventions (academic and behavioral) using Pyramid Response to Intervention (PRTI) principles, structures and culture.

Achievement Measures
|
|
By 2012, the CCRSB Pyramid of Interventions (academic) will be completed and implemented.
|
By 2012, the CCRSB Pyramid of Interventions (behavioral) will be completed and implemented.
|
|
Commitments:
- Lead teams will be established to complete and implement the CCRSB Pyramid of Interventions (academic and behavioral).
- Consultation with school stakeholders will be an important part of the completion and implementation processes.
- Students who have not met expectations on provincial assessments will be addressed through the CCRSB Pyramid of Interventions.
- CCRSB will administer the Early Development Instrument (EDI) to all primary students in CCRSB.

Budget: Initiatives in Strategy #4 will be funded from current CCRSB status quo budgets. The administration and analysis of the EDI will create a cost pressure of approximately $50,000, which has been included in the 2010-2011 budget on a “one time only” basis.
|
Strategy #5 – Expand opportunities for students to access and participate in healthy living programs and activities with a focus on increasing their physical activity and improving their nutritional health through the Health Promoting Schools Initiative.

Achievement Measures
|
|
By June 2011, all schools in CCRSB will have fully implemented, and be in compliance with, the NS Food & Nutrition in Schools policy.
|
By June 2011, all schools in CCRSB that are participating in the School Breakfast Program will have implemented, and be in compliance with, the Provincial Breakfast Program Standards.
|
By June 2012, all HPS professional development will integrate student health with student achievement.
|
By June 2013, the HPS Principal Advisory Group will have met twice yearly.
|
|
Commitments:
- Align all Health Promoting Schools resources to ensure schools receive targeted support specific to improving student health.
- Support schools in sustaining the full implementation of the Nova Scotia Food & Nutrition in Schools policy in collaboration with partners in Health Promotion Protection and the Department of Education.
- Analyze quantitative and qualitative data collected from school monitoring of the Health Promoting Schools Initiative to inform and improve professional development and manage resources in response to the latest research to ensure students healthy living needs are being met.
- Support schools in sustaining the School Breakfast Program in collaboration with community-based partners, DoE and HPP.
- Engage the HPS Principal Advisory Group to inform and support cross-functional team collaboration aligning student health with student achievement.
