Thorburn Principal Named One Of Canada’s Outstanding Principals

Lily DeYoungTRURO – The Chignecto-Central Regional School Board congratulates Lily DeYoung, Principal of Thorburn Consolidated School (TCS), for being recognized as one of Canada’s Outstanding Principals.

Lily DeYoung has been named as one of Canada’s Outstanding Principals for 2009 by The Learning Partnership, a Canadian not-for-profit organization that has championed public education since 1993.  Canada’s Outstanding Principals honours education leaders who have made a significant contribution to students and their school community, and have helped to ensure that Canada’s youth continue to receive a quality education.

Superintendent Noel Hurley commended DeYoung for her achievement. “Lily DeYoung is a deserving recipient of this award and we are proud to be able to celebrate this award with her.  Being named one of Canada's Outstanding Principals is a recognition of exemplary school leadership by those who know what school leaders do,” said Dr. Hurley, CCRSB Superintendent of Schools/CEO.  “Lily DeYoung is a caring individual who has made a tremendous contribution to student learning at Thorburn Consolidated and in the larger learning community of the Chignecto-Central Regional School Board.”

“Her great interpersonal skills have fostered effective communication and strengthened the home and school partnership so necessary for effective learning. She is collaborative with leaders throughout the entire region and is quick to offer help when she senses she can be of assistance,” said Hurley. “Lily epitomizes the friendly and genuine attitude that exemplifies Atlantic Canadians hospitality and this atmosphere permeates her school. It is a happy and welcoming place in which to learn.”

DeYoung was nominated by a group of Thorburn Consolidated School stakeholders including the staff, School Advisory Council, the Home and School Association, with support from Celtic Family of Schools Supervisor Lynn MacLean.  DeYoung has exemplified the qualities of an “outstanding” Principal through the development of an impressive co-curricular and extra-curricular program for students, the implementation of a school-wide behaviour program, and through her work as the curriculum and instructional leader of the school.   She is known as a master of the instructional strategies her staff uses and also believes in building the leadership capacity of her school staff.

Next month, Lily DeYoung will head to the University of Toronto’s Joseph R. Rotman School of Management for a five-day leadership program with other winning principals and will be inducted into the National Academy of Principals.  DeYoung is one of 31 Principals being bestowed this recognition this year and is the only Principal from Nova Scotia being honoured.  This is the second consecutive year that a Principal from the Chignecto-Central Regional School Board’s Celtic Family of Schools has been recognized as one of Canada’s Outstanding Principals.  In 2008, Allison McNeil-Wilson of Trenton Middle School received the same honour.
