Grade 4 students in Mrs. Sharkey’s class at Uniake District School are having a lot of fun learning what it takes to become a champion! The class has been selected from classrooms across Canada and the United States to participate in a program called Classroom Champions,which pairs classroms with Olympic athletes.

Classroom Champions paired the class with Canadian swimmer Ryan Cochrane , a 2x Olympian, Olympic Silver and Bronze Medalist and 6x World Champion medalist. Ryan sends the class videos and shout-outs each month based on monthly topics.  Using these videos and lessons the class replies with videos responses, pictures, and pieces of student work.

The Classroom Champions program has three main beliefs:

  • Strong role models for children are critical to making a difference in their lives;
  • Life skills like setting goals, perseverance, demonstrating fair play, community involvement and healthy living are important building blocks for a successful future; and
  • Supporting teachers in their work is paramount to students achieving their own success.

The students are looking forward to Skyping with Ryan in the near future!
