The Grade 6 students at Kennetcook District Elementary School have taken on a global action by gathering school supplies for 3 Mariposas Montessori, a unique early childhood development program created by children, parents and teachers located in Cabarete, Dominican Republic.

Shayna Piercy, a graduate of Hants North Rural High School, has accepted a position at 3 Mariposas Montessori, and will be delivering the school supplies the Grade 6 students have collected. The Grade 6 students will also have the opportunity to communicate with Shayna through the use of technology and learn more about the school in Cabarete and possibly take on other global actions for the children of the area.

The Grade 6 students attended We Day Atlantic  in Halifax on November 28.  We Day is a stadium-sized educational and empowerment event that brings young people together with world leaders and entertainers to celebrate their ability to create change and to inspire another year of action.

This year's guest speakers included:Travis Price, Co-founder of Pink Shirt Anti-Bullying day, Spencer West, Me to We motivational speaker, Free The Children ambassador and author,  and Kweku Mandela - grandson of Nelson Mandela. The students also enjoyed performances by groups such as Neverest, a Canadian pop-rock band and JRDN, a Juno Award winning artist. The students left feeling empowered to continue to make changes locally and globally!
