In a small and intimate ceremony on Thursday, December 18, CEC presented the 2014 Governor General’s Medal and Queen Elizabeth Medal to Rumana Rafiq and Keigan MacLean respectively.

Rumana Rafiq
The Governor General’s Medal, established in 1873, recognizes the student who has achieved the highest academic average based on their final Grade 11 and grade 12 marks.

Keigan MacLean
The Queen Elizabeth II Medal is awarded to the graduating student who:

  • Has demonstrated a superior achievement in school studies in all three years of high school;
  • Has achieved an outstanding record in all aspects of school and community involvement;
  • Is graduating having satisfied the requirements for a Nova Scotia High School Graduation Diploma.

CEC administration was very happy both recipients were home for the Christmas Break and could receive these prestigious awards in person.

The Governor General’s Medal and Queen Elizabeth Medal were previously awarded during graduation ceremonies. There is now a directive stating that these medals must be based on final grades and not anticipated or predicated grades. As final IB grades are not available until late summer, December was the first opportunity to present the medals to recipients in person.
