West Pictou Consolidated welcomes students, their families to a “Brilliant” place this evening
At the start of each school year, the staff of West Pictou Consolidated School invite students and their families in for “Meet the Teacher” night. Tonight, though, the evening is taking on a different significance: West Pictou is home to the Chignecto-Central Regional School Board’s first “Brilliant Labs Makerspace”.
Cindy Turner is the principal at West Pictou Consolidated. She and her staff are excited to introduce their school community to the new Lab. “West Pictou Consolidated is very excited with this opportunity! Makerspace will encourage our students’ creative abilities while using technology in new and fun ways. There is such a variety of technology available that the interests of all students will be met. We can't wait to see what projects the students come up with.”
The goal of a Brilliant Labs Makerspace is to make learning fun and relevant to the student by using tools, materials and technologies in new ways to solve everyday challenges. A Makerspace is a place where students can go to explore, innovate, problem-solve and be creative. It is an activity-based and imaginative zone that can be teacher-directed and student-initiated. Students will have access to a technology-rich environment that includes 3-D printers, robotics and video production equipment, along with more traditional tools and materials.
The Brilliant Labs space at West Pictou Consolidated will be available to all students in the school, as well as the community, as the roll-out progresses. Exact timelines are still being finalized.
Other CCRSB schools interested in pursuing a Brilliant Project, can apply to Brilliant Labs for funding online at http://brilliantlabs.ca/en_US/projets-2/. Brilliant Projects aim to support teachers and organizations working with children by providing additional supports and technology to help kick start cross-curricular Project Based Learning.
The Chignecto-Central Regional School Board is comprised of 17 board members and 2,700 staff all striving to develop independent, lifelong learners in a student-centered environment, with high expectations for all.
