Career Exploration Program: Food Services
Students enrolled in Food Services courses will experience a wide range of learning opportunities related to the food preparation industry. Open to students in grades 11 and 12, these courses help students develop some of the skills and knowledge necessary to participate in the food service industry.
As part of the Commercial Food Preparation and Dining Guest Service courses, students will take responsibility for the operation of an in-house catering business. In Commercial Food Preparation they will focus on the aspects of managing stock, security, kitchen technology, ordering and receiving food, profit and costing, and preparation of food for serving. In Dining Guest Service courses, students will focus on the aspects of front of house service such as set- up, safety, customer relations, menu design, venue management, marketing, and business opportunities for serving.
Students will develop a variety of skills and basic knowledge needed to explore careers in the Food Service Industry and related sectors while earning credits toward their high school graduation diploma. These courses are designed to meet the needs of a great range of learners, including those who may proceed to post-secondary education in this and other fields as well as those who will be seeking direct entry into the work force following high school graduation.
Food Services courses are offered at Amherst Regional High School, Cobequid Educational Centre, Hants East Rural High, Northumberland Regional High School and Springhill Junior/Senior High.
