PowerSchool - Student Information System
Chignecto-Central Regional School Board is introducing a new student information system called PowerSchool for across the school board. All schools will use PowerSchool by the end of 2012-2013 school year.
This system allows teachers and school administration to manage student attendance, schedules, achievement, and behavior. It also includes an updated report card format and an Internet-based portal for students and parents.
Report card format
The report card format provides parents and students with a clear and accurate picture of the student’s progress, and enables all schools in Nova Scotia to report on student achievement in a consistent way.
The report card consists of the following:
The Learner Profile is a snapshot of the student’s work habits and social development. As they have an impact on learning success, it is important for parents and students to understand what they are and how the student is doing in these areas.
Attendance Record tracks the days students have been absent against possible school days for each month in the term.
Achievement of Expected Learning Outcomes charts the student’s progress and achievement in relation to the expected learning outcomes for the current reporting period. Learning outcomes define what students are expected to know and be able to do in a particular subject area.
As Primary is a transitional year, progress is reported through teacher comments only that highlight the student's academic strengths and needs, and provide suggestions.
For Grades 1-8, progress is reported using A, B, C or D as described below and accompanying comments that highlight the student's academic strengths and needs, and provide suggestions.
For Grades 9-12, progress is reported using a percentage grade as described below and accompanying comments that highlight the student's academic strengths and needs, and provide suggestions.
The Response Sheet is to be completed and signed by the parent, and then returned to the school. Parents are always encouraged to discuss the report card with their child's teacher.
The Internet-based portal allows students, parents and guardians to see attendance, grades, assignments, teacher's comments and upcoming school events online. This portal replaces other portals such as K-12 Planet and eClass Grades that were used in some CCRSB schools. The new portal offers the same features as the former portals, includes additional features in many cases, and is easy to use.
Schools will advise parents/guardians when the portal is ready.
PowerSchool: an initiative of iNSchool
PowerSchool is part of a province-wide initiative called iNSchool. This initiative is led by the Nova Scotia Department of Education, in partnership with the province’s eight school boards. The aim of iNSchool is to use technology to better support student achievement through one common, province-wide, student information system.
